Factors Influencing the Enrollment of Clinical Instructors in the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program:Ê Perspectives of the APTA Credentialed Trainers

Purpose: Clinical education is an integral part of professional education and the Clinical Instructor (CI) is instrumental to student success. The American Physical Therapy Association Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP), provides physical therapist and physical therapist assistant CIs with the knowledge, skills, and behaviors to meet the APTA Clinical Instructor Guidelines. The CCIP is an optional continuing education course for all CIs. Currently, there are over 34,000 credentialed PT CIs.Ê Previous research investigated the factors that facilitate and impede the CIs decision to pursue APTA credentialing from the perspective of the CI. However, it is important to look at the perspective of all stakeholders. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate facilitating and impeding factors from the perspective of the APTA Credentialed Clinical Trainers, with the hope of creating a more complete picture of the challenges CIs face when pursuing credentialing. ÊMethods/Description: Subjects: Total population sampling of 204 CCTs were recruited. Methods: Descriptive exploratory study utilizing an idiosyncratic survey instrument. Pilot study was conducted to increase the face validity. Internal consistency was tested using CronbachÕs Alpha. Majority trends in the data were reported in frequencies and percentages.Results/Outcomes: Of the 204 surveys emailed, 4 were undeliverable due to inactive/invalid addresses, totaling 200 surveys delivered. Of these 200, 104 surveys were returned, 5 were excluded from the study secondary to being incomplete, giving a final response rate of 49.5% (n=99/200). CCTs perceive that the impeding factors: 1. CIÕs prefer to take CEUs relevant to clinical practice (n = 94/99, 95.2% A/SA) 2. CIÕs intend to take the course but are too busy (n = 82/99, 82.8% A/SA) 3. CIÕs employing facility does not pay for the course (n = 77/99, 77.8% A/SA). CCTs perceived that the facilitating factors: 1. the CI has a personal desire to strengthen their skills as an instructor (n = 96/99, 97.0% A/SA) 2. first time CIÕs desire to gain new skills and ideas (n = 88/99, 88.9 A/SA) 3. reduced travel time to the course (n = 82/99, 82.8% A/SA), (4) to gain CEUs (n = 81/99, 81.8% A/SA).Conclusions/Relevance to the conference theme: Shaping the Future of Physical Therapy Education: This research provides the perspective of the CCT regarding the question of "why CIs do or do not pursue APTA credentialing?" This perspective will help those involved with development and administration of the CCIP better understand how CIs perceive the course. The facilitating and impeding factors implicated in this study as influencing the CIÕs decision to pursue APTA credentialing can be used to help shape the future of the CCIP and make it more user friendly and ready to address the needs of the CI.Ê Clinical education is such a large portion of the physical therapy curriculum today and the instruction of this part of the programs is done by Clinical Instructors.Ê Understanding the needs of Clinical Instructors will have a positive impact on the future ofÊ physical therapy education ÊReferences: Cross V.
